What is Zepbound®?
Zepbound® is an FDA-approved prescription medication containing tirzepatide, a GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. Along with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, it is used to help eligible adults with obesity or overweight lose weight and keep it off.
Is Zepbound® the same as Mounjaro®?
Zepbound® and Mounjaro® contain the same active ingredient, tirzepatide, but are approved for different uses. Zepbound® is FDA-approved for chronic weight management, while Mounjaro® is FDA-approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
How do you take Zepbound®?
Zepbound® is injected under the skin once weekly. The autoinjector is a prefilled, single-use pen. If prescribed, your provider and pharmacy will give you exact dosing and administration instructions.
What are the side effects of Zepbound®?
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion, injection-site reactions, fatigue, burping, hair loss, and acid reflux. Gastrointestinal side effects may be more noticeable when starting treatment or increasing the dose. Contact your healthcare provider if a side effect is severe, does not go away, or is bothersome.
Who shouldn't take Zepbound®?
Zepbound® should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), people with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to tirzepatide or another ingredient in Zepbound®. Zepbound® is not recommended for people with severe gastroparesis. Tell your provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, take insulin or certain diabetes medications, or have a history of pancreas, gallbladder, kidney, or diabetic eye problems. Zepbound® should be discontinued if pregnancy occurs. Your provider will review your medical history before prescribing.
