What is Ozempic®?
Ozempic® is an FDA-approved prescription medication containing semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Along with diet and exercise, it is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Ozempic® is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, not weight management. Semaglutide is separately FDA-approved for chronic weight management under the brand name Wegovy®.
How do you take Ozempic®?
Ozempic® is injected under the skin once weekly using a prefilled, multi-dose pen. If prescribed, your provider and pharmacy will give you exact dosing and administration instructions.
What are the side effects of Ozempic®?
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and constipation. Gastrointestinal side effects may be more noticeable when starting treatment or increasing the dose and may decrease over time. Contact your healthcare provider if a side effect is severe, persistent, or bothersome.
Who shouldn’t take Ozempic®?
Ozempic® should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, those with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, or anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or another ingredient in Ozempic®. Tell your provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, take insulin or certain diabetes medications, or have a history of pancreas, gallbladder, kidney, or diabetic eye problems. Stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. Your provider will review your medical history before prescribing.
