What is Mounjaro®?
Mounjaro® is an FDA-approved prescription medication containing tirzepatide, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. Along with diet and exercise, it is used to improve blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes.
Is Mounjaro® approved for weight loss?
Mounjaro® is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, not weight management. Tirzepatide is separately FDA-approved for chronic weight management under the brand name Zepbound®.
How do you take Mounjaro®?
Mounjaro® is injected under the skin once weekly using a single-dose prefilled pen. If prescribed, your provider and pharmacy will give you exact dosing and administration instructions.
What are the side effects of Mounjaro®?
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, and stomach pain. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may be more noticeable when the dose is increased and may decrease over time.
Who shouldn’t take Mounjaro®?
Mounjaro® should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, those with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to tirzepatide or another ingredient in Mounjaro®. Mounjaro® is not recommended for people with severe gastroparesis. Tell your provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, take insulin or certain other diabetes medications, or have a history of pancreas, kidney, gallbladder, or diabetic eye problems. Your provider will review your medical history before prescribing.
